BEYOND THE BOARDS
TRAINING CAMP: DAY THREE

Session One (7:45-8:45 a.m.)

Matt Hackett

Matt Hackett has had a few months to get acclimated with the Buffalo Sabres organization and is enjoying his first training camp in Buffalo.

“The on-ice is tough, but I feel like I’m getting better,” Hackett said after practice Friday morning at First Niagara Center. “To work with [Sabres goaltending coach] Jim Corsi and to see Ryan Miller and these guys out here, it’s fun to be a part of.”

He and center Johan Larsson were acquired as part of the trade that sent Jason Pominville to the Minnesota Wild in March. Hackett was drafted in the third round by Minnesota during the 2009 NHL Draft (77th overall) and has played in 13 NHL games over the past two seasons.

After the trade, Hackett appeared in three regular season games for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League and started Game Two of the team’s first-round playoff series against Toronto. He’s had the chance to work with Amerks goaltending coach Bob Janosz to improve his game.

“Bob Janosz is good to work with. It’s nice to have a goalie coach down there full-time that you can work with and lean on and talk to constantly,” Hackett said. “That’s a big difference than when I was in Houston [of the AHL]. I had no one to talk to really. My goalie coach would come down once a month and it’s just nice to have someone there all the time.”

Hackett is the favorite to start in goal for the Amerks this season, but he has aspirations to play in the NHL as soon as this season.

“I’d like to be here at some point,” he said. “I feel like I’ve proved myself here [in the NHL] for a few games in Minnesota and I feel like I can play at this level. That’s my goal and I’m sure that’s everyone else’s goal here to make the team as well.”
