Logan Nelson (2012, fifth round) recorded his second career WHL hat trick Saturday as the Victoria Royals ended a six-game road losing streak with a 5-3 victory at Medicine Hat. Nelson, a 23-goal scorer a season ago, had a streak of 12 straight games without a mark halted by the deluge.
Nelson competed hard at both ends to capture the game’s first star, using speed to get behind the defense on his first two goals while on several occasions employing his 6-foot-1, 181-pound frame to separate Tigers skaters from the puck. The Rogers, Minn. native enters mid-November with six goals and 19 points through the Royals’ first 20 contests.
Mikhail Grigorenko (2012, first round) connected for the first four-goal game of his QMJHL career Sunday to guide Quebec to a 5-4 shootout triumph over Cape Breton. The output gives the talented centerman 16 goals and 36 points through the Remparts’ first 18 games, with a 2.00 points-per-game average that tops the entire league.
On Monday, Grigorenko was excellent en route to posting a goal and an assist as Team Russia opened the 2012 Subway Super Series with a 6-2 thrashing of Team QMJHL. A virtual lock for the 2013 World Junior Championship roster, the 6-foot-2 center played a lesser role in Wednesday’s rematch as Team Russia was handed a 5-2 loss.
Dan Catenacci (2011, third round) added eight points to his stat line over the weekend to lead the Owen Sound Attack to a pair of victories. After scoring two goals and an assist Friday in Brampton, Catenacci unloaded another five points (1+4) Saturday against Sault Ste. Marie. After he earned the number one star in consecutive games, the weekend’s efforts give the speedy forward plenty of momentum heading into Monday’s appearance with Team OHL for Game Four of the Subway Super Series.
In Saturday action, Justin Kea (2012, third round) scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime as Saginaw battled back to earn a 4-3 victory at Belleville. The goal was the fourth of the year for the defensive-minded pivot, tying a personal best posted in 2010-11 as an OHL rookie.
Alex Lepkowski (2011, fifth round) maintained his spot with Ryan O'Connor on Barrie's top defensive pair as the Colts won two of the week’s three tilts. Lepkowski’s two-way steadiness has been a driving force behind the Colts’ surge to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.
Belleville defender Brady Austin (2012, seventh round) earned his sixth assist of the season Sunday as the Bulls held on for a 3-2 win at Ottawa. Having previously seen time at forward during his time in Erie, Austin continues to leverage his mobility to be an added offensive catalyst from the Bulls’ back end.
Goaltender Andrey Makarov made 20 saves Friday to earn his eighth win of the year as Saskatoon doubled Regina 6-3. The Russian backstop returned to the net on Saturday, allowing five goals on 33 shots before giving way to Alex Moodie for the game’s final 15 minutes in a 6-2 loss to Seattle. Makarov, who has received work in all of the Blades’ 19 games, will join Team Russia in the coming week for the WHL leg of the Subway Super Series.
Colin Jacobs (2011, fourth round) collected two assists as Prince George walked away from a three-game weekend with just one of a possible six points. Following a hot start that saw him collect 14 points (7+7) through his first eight outings, Jacobs’ pace has slowed with a goal and five assists in his last dozen.
Christian Isackson (2010, seventh round) picked up an assist as Minnesota earned one win and one tie in their weekend trip to Alaska-Anchorage. The sophomore right winger has gathered points in five of the Gophers’ nine games heading into next weekend’s set with Wisconsin.
Judd Peterson (2012, seventh round) went without a point Saturday as Cedar Rapids finished a brief road trip with a 3-1 loss in Omaha. Peterson has amassed two goals and seven points while appearing in nine of the RoughRiders’ 13 contests.
Joel Armia (2011, first round) participated in pre-tourney practices but did not play as Finland placed second at the 4-Nations event in Sundsvall, Sweden. A veteran of two U20 World Junior Championships, Armia joined Markus Granlund (CGY) and Miikka Salomaki (NSH) on the sidelines as Finland continued to sort out their entry for the 2013 tourney, which begins Dec. 26 in Ufa, Russia.
