Buffalo Sabres 2012 draft pick Jake McCabe was today named captain of the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the World Junior Championship that begins Thursday in Russia. Joining McCabe as alternate captains are Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.), Seth Jones, J.T. Miller and Jacob Trouba.
A second-round pick (44th overall) of the Sabres this past June in Pittsburgh, McCabe is currently in his sophomore season patrolling the blueline for the University of Wisconsin Badgers. In 16 games with the Badgers this season, the 6-foot-1 McCabe has collected nine points (2+7) and 18 penalty minutes. Both of McCabe’s goals have been scored on the power play.
McCabe participated in USA Hockey’s National Junior Team Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid last August, seeing two games of action against Finland as part of the three-team round-robin that also included Sweden. The lefthanded-shooting McCabe was also served as an assistant captain for USA’s gold-medal winning team at the 2010 World Under-17 Challenge, defeating Canada-Ontario 2-1 in the championship game in Timmins, Ont. The Americans finished that tournament with a perfect 6-0-0 record, and were coached by current Rochester Americans head coach Ron Rolston.
The alternate captains will be split into two pairs, with Jones and Miller wearing an 'A' in one uniform color, and Bardreau and Trouba doing do so in the other jersey color. Trouba and Miller each played on the 2012 U.S. National Junior Team.
The U.S. will look to earn its third medal in four years at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013. Team USA captured the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship in Saskatoon, Sask., and the bronze medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.
The first game for Team USA at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship is Thursday, Dec. 27, vs. Germany. Game time is 8 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) with live coverage available on NHL Network and NHL.com.
