Buffalo breeds all kinds of Sabres fans. Whether you were born here or moved to the area, it’s difficult not to root for the blue and gold. From die-hard fans since the formation of the franchise, to children attending their first Sabres game, and everyone in-between, the organization wants to make sure it’s reaching all of them.
One of the main priorities of the Buffalo Sabres is to reach out to as many fans in as many different demographics as possible. A core group of fans from this area includes local students who support the Sabres as much as any other fan. One of the ways the Sabres are trying to show appreciation for them is through the “Student Surge” promotion, presented by Canisius College. The program offers local students the opportunity to buy home game tickets for just $25.
“One of our goals is to foster as many fans as we can, and to build fans through each generation,” says Brent Rossi, Buffalo Sabres Vice President of Brand Strategy and Marketing. “With the expense of college and what students have to pay day in and day out, we recognize that. We want everyone to be able to consume the Sabres product.”
With so much interest in the “Student Surge” ticket program last season, the Sabres decided to bring it back for the second straight year, and are getting even better results. “Student Surge” tickets are selling out before game-day for the majority of home games and have been in high demand so far this season.
New this season is the Canisius College sponsorship of the program. One hundred tickets are reserved for each home game for Canisius students, and as many as 100 more tickets are then available for other local students to purchase, depending on demand for that game. The $25 tickets are located in the 300 Level II sections of First Niagara Center.
Allowing students to buy cheaper tickets adds to the already high-power intensity in First Niagara Center during home games and helps to increase the number of fans able to attend games.
“The amount of energy that this crowd brings to each game is amazing,” explains Rossi. “Anything we can do to increase the fan experience is a great opportunity.”
With so much popularity from “Student Surge” during the past two seasons, the Buffalo Sabres will look to continue the program for years to come and try to find new ways to recognize the support of fans from every generation.
