The Buffalo Sabres may be looking to Portland to help with an injured defense corp.

Toni Lydman was absent from practice for the second consecutive day after blocking a shot in Monday’s game against Nashville while Craig Rivet is still recovering from an upper body injury he sustained in Montreal on Saturday.

 12/3- Craig Rivet Interview

12/3- Lindy Ruff Interview

Rivet practiced with the team today, but in a “no-contact basis” according to Head Coach Lindy Ruff.

“Toni tried to skate before practice,” Ruff said. “It wasn’t very good so we’ll have to see how Craig [Rivet] is doing with the possibility of bringing somebody up maybe.”

Mike Weber may be the logical choice to fill in as the Sabres travel to Florida to take on the Panthers Thursday, already recalled once this season for a two-game stint. The defenseman has two assists and 51 penalty minutes through 19 games for the Pirates this season.

“We’re just waiting,” Ruff said. “Weber has had some medical issues down there so we’re waiting to see on that front too.”

Derek Roy [back spasms] and Andrew Peters [abdominal strain] both returned to the ice Wednesday after missing practice yesterday.

Pat Kaleta and Tim Connolly [rib] will not make the three-game road trip to Florida.

Kaleta is recovering from a head/neck injury he sustained in Montreal after taking a hard hit from Canadiens’ forward Andrei Kostitsyn on Saturday.

Connolly has missed the last eight games with a broken rib and is on a week-to-week basis after taking a blow from St. Louis’ Keith Tkachuk on Nov. 12. Ruff said the centerman may be able to begin skating as early as next week.

“Tim is getting better," Ruff said. "He is riding the bike and exercising and feeling better."
