Hitting the Links for a Good Cause

August 23, 2005

A slew of Buffalo Sabres were out in force on Monday participating in various charitable golf tournaments to benefit different causes.

Hasek's Heroes Celebrity Golf Tournament
Daniel Briere got a chance to try out his new driver, while Adam Mair and James Patrick each worked out the kinks in their swing at Cherry Hill Golf Club Monday afternoon.

The tournament was held to raise funds for the nonprofit group that strives to teach the game of hockey to underprivileged inner-city youths. The program currently consists of about 200 young skaters.

Since late last year, Hasek's Heroes also took on the sole responsibility for operating the Riverside Rink, a single-rink facility that was slated to be shutdown due to the city and county's fiscal crisis.

Under the organization's guidance, the rink now remains open year-round and has become home to the Buffalo Sled Hockey Group.

Hasek's Hereos was originally founded by former Sabres goaltender - Dominik Hasek - in 2001 and has grown steadily since.

The organization's resources rely heavily on corporate sponsorship and fundraising.

Jay McKee/Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Celebrity Gold Classic
Defenseman Jay McKee hosted the 11th annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, N.Y.

Several current Sabres along with some alumni were in attendance, including Tim Connolly, Daniel Paille and prospect Patrick Kaleta.

Last year, the event raised a record $125, 000 for the Western New York Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research.

The Craig Charron Celebrity Golf Tournament
Rochester Americans Alumni Craig Charron again this year lent his name and time to the tournament started by former Rochester Americans defenseman John Bednarski.

Defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick notched his first career hole-in-one, while Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters also competed in the event along with his brother, Geoff, and New Jersey Devils winger and Rochester native, Brian Gionta.

The day-long tournament began with a Noon shotgun start and was followed by an awards ceremony, reception and live auction with proceeds benefiting the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
