Defensive Player of the Week

February 6, 2006

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, who led the Sabres to three victories with a 1.63 goals-against average and .944 save percentage, is the League’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Goaltenders Manny Legace of the Detroit Red Wings (3-0-0, 1.29 GAA, one shutout), Cristobal Huet of the Montreal Canadiens (2-1-0, 1.40 GAA, two shutouts in four games) and Curtis Sanford of the St. Louis Blues (3-1-0, 3.11 GAA) were runners-up for the defensive award.

Miller began the week by turning aside 35 of 37 shots as the Sabres defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2 on Jan. 31. He made 21 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Feb. 2 and stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 2-1 shootout victory over the Ottawa Senators Feb. 4. Miller turned aside all three Ottawa shootout attempts, improving his season record in shootouts to 3-0 and his save percentage to .889 (eight saves in nine attempts).

Miller has posted a 18-7-0 record, a 2.18 goals-against average and .925 save percentage, helping the Sabres (34-15-3, 71 points) reach second place in the Northeast Division and seventh in the NHL overall. He has won his past five starts and is 12-3-0 since returning from a broken thumb Dec. 19.
