Sabres Pick Persson In 1st Round

June 24, 2006

With the 24th selection in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, the Buffalo Sabres picked defenseman Dennis Persson.

Persson (6'1'', 181 lbs.) scored 11 goals and 26 points in 28 games for Vasteras of the Swedish Junior League and received a final ranking of 14th overall for European skaters by the Central Scouting Service.

"The Sabres have given me a big opportunity," said Persson. "This was a big surprise."

Persson is described by Central Scouting as a good skater that likes to join the rush and possesses solid offensive instincts. The native of Nykoping, Sweden, can read the play well and has the ability to handle the puck in both zones.

Boasting a decent shot, Persson could play the point on the power play. Two of the defenseman's biggest attributes are his work ethic and team-first attitude.

Persson had interviewed twice with the Sabres before the selection: once during the Scouting Combine in Toronto, and then on Friday prior to the draft.

"(Jim Benning and Darcy Regier) showed a pretty big interest in me (during those interviews)," said Persson.
