Sticking with Defense

June 24, 2006

The Buffalo Sabres chose defenseman Mike Weber with the second of the team's pair of second-round selections at 57th overall. A selection to the 2006 CHL Top Prospects Game in Ottawa, Weber appeared in 68 games for Windsor (OHL), scoring five goals and 26 points. His 181 penalty minutes were good enough for second on the Spitfires.

Weber (6'2'', 199 lbs.) is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native who patterned his game after Calgary's Dion Phaneuf. He is a solid skater with good balance, agility and lateral movement. He is solid in his own zone, is difficult to beat one-on-one due to his impressive reach and makes a crisp first pass to clear the puck.

A consummate competitor who finishes checks on every shift, Weber can be effective at the point when he utilizes his shot and often jumps into the play during five-on-five.
