In his rookie season with Buffalo in 2005-06, Pominville amassed 30 points (18+12) in 57 games, including 10 power-play goals and two game winners. The 23-year-old Pominville started the season in Rochester (AHL), and was leading the league with 19 goals in 18 games at the time of his recall on November 26.
During the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 6'0'', 186 lbs. native of Repentigny, Quebec, led all NHL rookies with five goals and 10 points in 18 games, along with a rookie-best 22.7 shooting percentage. Pominville became the first player in NHL history to clinch a series win in overtime with a shorthanded goal in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals versus Ottawa. He also scored a hat trick in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Philadelphia.
Pominville was Buffalo's fourth choice (55th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
While playing with Shawinigan of the QMJHL in 2002, Pominville was named to the league's First All-Star Team, scoring 121 points (57+64) in 66 games.
