Sabres Agree To Terms With Lydman

July 27, 2006

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with restricted free agent defenseman Toni Lydman. Lydman was scheduled for NHL arbitration today in Toronto.

In his first season with the Sabres in 2005-06 after being acquired in a trade from Calgary last August, Lydman picked up 17 points (1+16) and 82 PIMs in 75 games. The 6-1, 202 lb.-native of Lahti, Finland, led all Buffalo skaters by averaging 21:38 of ice time per game, and was ninth in the league with 174 blocked shots.

Lydman played in all 18 of Buffalo's games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, finishing with five points (1+4) and 18 PIMs. Lydman was also seventh in the league with 52 blocked shots, twice posting a game-high seven blocks (Game 5, ECSF @ Ottawa; Game 6, ECF vs. Carolina) in the postseason.

Lydman won a silver medal with Finland in the 2006 Winter Olympics, scoring one goal in eight games of action.

In five NHL seasons, Lydman has recorded 110 points (20+90) in 364 games.

Lydman, 28, was Calgary's fifth choice (89th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
