Ronan Tynan Returns Tonight

December 12, 2006

"When Ronan sings the clouds cry but the sun turns up sooner than it would have"- Bono of U2

The unique friendship between the Buffalo Sabres and Legendary Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan continues Thursday December 14th, as Ronan returns once again to sing God Bless America before the game and some of his favorite holiday selections at Intermission. It all happens as the Sabres take on the Florida Panthers at 7pm at HSBC Arena.

Ronan first sang for the Sabres opening night of the 05-06 season and returned 3 times after that to sing at Sabres Games.

Tynan's own story is one of inspiration. He was born with a lower leg disability. Following a motorcycle accident more complications occurred and Tynan had both of his legs amputated below the knee at the age of 21.

Much like the Sabres, Tynan refused to be beaten. Just a few months after the amputation, he began training for the Paralympics.

Between 1981 and 1984 the native of County Kilkenny, Ireland captured 18 gold medals and established 14 world records in the discus, shot put, javelin and 100-meter dash events.

He later rode as an equestrian on the Irish National Amateur Team, placing fourth in the Grand Prix in the team event.

Later Tynan became the first disabled person to be admitted to the National College of Physical Education, earning a medical degree from Trinity College in Dublin. Today, as a medical doctor, Tynan specializes in orthopedic sports injuries.

Finally, he began to study music at the age of 33. After performing in several operas Tynan joined the Irish Tenors. Together they sang in front of millions of fans around the globe.

Now as a soloist, Tynan continues to enjoy success. He sang at President Ronald Reagan's funeral, Nancy Reagan's birthday party, the 80th birthday party for George H.W. Bush, the 2004 Belmont Stakes, as well as becoming a regular at Yankee games.

Ronan is currently touring in support of his new album The Dawning of the Day on Universal Records.

Upon remodeling their locker room this past summer the Buffalo Sabres placed a Ronan Tyan quote in the entrance way " The team player gets the result. Not one man. If a team plays cohesively and plays for each other and knows each others moves, that team will win." The Magic and the Inspiration of Ronan Tynan have certainly had a presence as the Sabres have kicked off one of their most spectacular seasons in decades.

Along with his appearance for the Sabres, Ronan will also receive a career achievement award from The Irish Classical Theater while in Buffalo.
