Hockey In Buffalo

February 8, 2007

As Western New York celebrates in the excitement of this year's Buffalo Sabres, the Toy Town Museum is celebrating the history of hockey in Western New York with the opening of its newest exhibit "Hockey in Buffalo" presented by Time Warner.

For many, they may not remember the early teams of the Buffalo Majors and the Buffalo Bisons that first introduced professional hockey to Western New York in the late 1920's. They probably may not know that the games were originally played in the Peace Bridge Arena in Fort Erie and the Broadway Auditorium before the opening of Memorial Auditorium in the 1940's.

Well, the Toy Town Museum's newest exhibit will give hockey fans of all ages the opportunity to see through a collection of original jerseys, programs, and memorabilia and of course, toys, just why people love the sport of hockey so much. The exhibit chronicles the history of hockey in Western New York from its start to the hottest team on ice today, the Buffalo Sabres.

The grand opening of the exhibit is scheduled for Sunday, February 11 at 1 p.m. On hand to assist in the opening of the exhibit will be Buffalo Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters and Sabretooth. Following the opening, there will be an autograph signing until 2 p.m. and a meet and greet with Sabretooth.

The Toy Town Museum has showcased local sports history before with two previous exhibits-"Feel the Power- the history of the Buffalo Bills" and "Let's Play Ball" highlighting baseball in Buffalo. "We have found a niche as a museum in being able to recognize the history of local favorites from our sports teams to our local toy makers" comments Lynn Kinsella, Marketing Representative for the Toy Town Museum. "The Toy Town Museum is proud to share with both local and out of town visitors why our area is so special."

"Hockey in Buffalo" will be on display through June and has been made possible through the support of Time Warner and Tim Horton's.

The Toy Town Museum is a not for profit organization located at 636 Girard Ave. in East Aurora. The museum is open Monday- Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is free and there is handicapped accessibility. Group tours are available. For additional information, please call (716) 687-5151.
