Sabres Pick up M. Lehtonen

February 27, 2007

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the team has acquired defenseman Mikko Lehtonen (MEE-koh LEHT-oh-nen) from the Nashville Predators, in exchange for Buffalo’s fourth-round selection in the 2007 Entry Draft.

Lehtonen (28 years old, 6-1, 194) has three points (1+2) in 15 games with Nashville this season. He has also played in 35 games with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), scoring four goals and eight assists, along with 28 PIMs.

A native of Oulu, Finland, Lehtonen was Nashville’s ninth-round choice (271st overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft. Lehtonen signed his first pro contract with Nashville on June 1, 2006. He earned a bronze medal with Finland at the 2006 World Championships, and helped Karpat capture the Finnish Elite League championship in 2004 and 2005.
