Trio Plants Trees For Arbor Day

April 27, 2007

Arbor Day weekend Saturday Re-Tree WNY activities "face-off" with a special tree planting featuring Buffalo Sabres player Paul Gaustad, Managing Partner Larry Quinn and mascot Sabretooth. The event begins at 9:30 am in the Fruit Belt Section of Buffalo near the Buffalo Medical Campus on Carlton Street at the corner of Jefferson Ave. The Buffalo Sabres will also announce a special donation for Re-Tree WNY to buy trees.

Numerous tree plantings will take place throughout all of Western New York. Volunteer crews, about 300 strong, coordinated by Youth Bureau AmeriCorps, will be hitting area roadsides, neighborhoods, and parks to start the major reforestation project activated in the wake of the October, 2006 surprise snowstorm. Re-Tree WNY will be planting about 30,000 trees over the next five years that are replacing the destroyed or damaged trees from the freak storm. The snow created enough damage to get the WNY area declared a disaster area by the federal government.

Another special planting will take place at 3PM on the Franklin side of Buffalo's revered Wilcox Mansion, site of the Theodore Roosevelt Inauguration in the early 1900's. Re-Tree WNY will be planting a special "presidential tree", a red oak that is descendant of the tree that adorns the Theodore Roosevelt Sagamore Hill Estate on Long Island, NY. The tree was sent to Buffalo from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's office.

Throughout the day tree planting sites will include neighborhood block clubs in Buffalo, plantings in Clarence, and the largest planting of the spring for Re-Tree WNY, several hundred trees being planted in the fruit belt area of Buffalo in the vicinity of the Medical Coridor. The trees will be planted according to the names of the streets, including Locust, Maple, Oak, etc. This is the only program that will follow a mono-culture planting, that is, trees that are of one species all on the particular street. Volunteers will gather at 8:30 am on Saturday in the parking lot behind St. John Baptist Church on Goodell and Washington Street to get their trees and equipment.

Further information on planting locations, volunteering, and donating to Re-Tree WNY is available at www.re-treewny.org.
