Defenseman Brian Campbell has been named captain for the month of December.  Head coach Lindy Ruff cited Campbell's drive, constant determination and the willingness to take on any responsibility as reasons for the honor.

"Brian's play warrants it," said Ruff.  "Game in and game out, whether we've asked 30 minutes, 20 minutes or any situation, he's been there.  He's been in the system a long time and with the team a long time."

The six-foot, 190-pound defenseman has traveled a long road to get to this point.  Buffalo's sixth-round selection (156th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Campbell  had to fight though some difficult seasons where he was in the press box as a healthy scratch more times than he was in the lineup.

He's grown up as a Sabre and now feels the pride of wearing the "C" for the only NHL team for which he has played.

"I said last year when I got voted to and played in an All-Star Game, my parents looked at each other and said that they never expected this to be happening or to see their son doing that," said Campbell.  "They won't expect this to be happening either."

Campbell  was an alternate captain last month.

After becoming the third Sabres captain this season - joining Jochen Hecht (Oct.) and Toni Lydman (Nov.) - Campbell gave a breif speech to the team.

"I just basically told them that we were at .500 right now and that we want to get a good push here headed forward," Campbell said.  "We want to reestablish ourselves in a playoff position."

Hecht and Jaroslav Spacek were named alternate captains for December.

OTHER NOTES FROM THIS MORNING'S SKATE

-- Adam Mair (ankle) will play tonight, marking the first time he'll be active since Nov. 5.   He missed the team's last 10 games.

"This is pretty much when I've been ready to play," said Mair.  "I don't think I could have played before this.

"I personally didn't [think he would be out for four weeks].  But when I saw the doctor the next day after the injury he said these things tend to take four to six weeks.  It's about 3 1/2 weeks right now.  I personally didn't think it would be this long, but it was one of those injuries that just nagged."

"I want to continue to see him grow," said Ruff.  "I think he had a very good couple of weeks with us, offensively, scoring three goals and four points in 10 games.  We had him in a situation where we thought he could succeed, playing with Jochen [Hecht] and Jason Pominville

"At the same time, I don't want to see any dip in his play and I would like to see him continue that growth.

"He sends a pretty strong message coming here and playing the way he did."
