Take a look at the NHL Conference standings and you'll notice one thing.  When a team allows more goals than it scores, they generally have a losing record.

Seems simple enough, but look a little closer.

Only two teams in either conference that would make the playoffs, if the season ended right now, have allowed more goals than they've scored, the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild.

New York is teetering on the brink in the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, while Minnesota is a little more comfortable in seventh out West.

Now look that the bottom eight teams in each conference.  Only two teams have scored more goals than they've allowed, the Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks.

Buffalo is currently in 13th place in the East and Chicago is 11th in the West.

This doesn't really mean anything concrete, it's just an interesting point.

Since the 2001-02 season, only seven teams have made the playoffs with a GA higher than GF.  Out of those seven, only the Montreal Canadiens in 2001-02 made it out of the first round.

See results below.

2006-07 -- Tampa Bay Lightning (Lost First Round)
2005-06 -- Montreal Canadiens (Lost First Round), Tampa Bay Lightning (Lost First Round)
2003-04 -- Nashville Predators (Lost First Round), St. Louis Blues (Lost First Round)
2002-03 -- New York Islanders (Lost First Round)
2001-02 -- Montreal Canadiens (Lost Second Round)

Make your own conclusions on this...
