SABRES ACQUIRE BERNIER AND FIRST-ROUND PICK IN EXCHANGE FOR CAMPBELL AND SEVENTH
Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the team has acquired RW Steve Bernier and San Jose’s first-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for D Brian Campbell and Buffalo’s seventh-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Campbell was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

The 22-year-old Bernier (6-foot-2, 225 lbs.) has 23 points (13+10) and 62 PIMs in 59 games for the Sharks this season. For his career, Bernier has 81 points (42+39) in 160 games. Twelve of Bernier’s 42 career goals have been scored on the power play. Bernier has also scored seven points (1+6) in 22 playoff games with San Jose over the past two seasons.

Bernier, a native of Quebec City, QC, was San Jose’s first-round choice (16th overall) in the 2003 Entry Draft. He played junior hockey with Moncton of the QMJHL, where he scored 313 points (151-162) in 271 games over four seasons. He was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2002, and was a Second Team All-Star in 2003 and 2004.

Bernier will become just the second player (Ken Priestlay) to wear #56 in Sabres history.
