The first game will be at 6 p.m. with juniors from each city facing off against one another, followed by a game at 8 p.m. between seniors from each city. The winner of the second game will be awarded the Scotty Bowman Cup.
The event is named after the legendary Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history. He will be in attendance to present the Bowman Cup to the victorious senior team.
Players will be individually nominated and rated by a group of area high school, midget and junior coaches from both cities based on their play this past season. The final selection of each team will then completed by the Buffalo Sabres based on the ratings of the nominating committee. The announcement of the participants for each game will take place during the week of March 24.
New to this year’s event is the Music Is Art Foundation’s “High School Battle of The Bands,” featuring some of the best musical talent that Western New York has to offer. Six finalists (chosen from over 150 WNY schools) will perform during intermission and in between games for a panel of music industry professionals, with one chosen as the Best High School Band in WNY. The bands will compete in a special performance area in the Zamboni end of the arena, which will be broadcast on the HD videoboard and throughout the arena sound system.
The Music Is Art’s “Battle of the Bands” is the brainchild of the Goo Goo Dolls Robby Takac, who formed the Music Is Art Foundation to use the arts to engage youth in schools and community. “I'm thrilled to partner with Buffalo Sabres for what will undoubtedly be an awesome display of young talent from Western New York in both music and sports,” said Takac.
