EARTH DAY 2008: DOING THEIR PART
The Blue & Gold Make Green Initiative isn’t the only “Green Team” in Buffalo.

Proving Western New York’s commitment to global issues, South Park High School’s own environmental crew met at the Bailey Peninsula on April 19 for the 2008 Spring Shoreline Clean-up.

Comprised of 40 locations throughout Buffalo the event drew more than 1,000 participants, including the Sabres Green Team staff, to assist in the beautification of the city’s waterways.

“The Niagara River is one of the most important and beautiful waterways in the entire world,” Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper Julie O’Neill said. “We live on what is the equivalent of the Everglades or the Grand Canyon… but we forget it.”

Clearing trash, graffiti and unwanted vegetation, more than 60 volunteers worked remove the effects of pollution.

“I think that this is something that the whole world should embrace… It’s just so important not only for us but for future generations that have to deal with our mistakes,” said one of the founders of South Park’s Green Team, Branden Carpenter.

Seeing the deterioration of the city’s parks last year, in particular the Bailey Peninsula and Seneca Bluffs, Carpenter and three classmates opted to make a difference.

With the help of their science teacher, Mike Hovey, the students soon formed a Green Team concerned with environmental issues surrounding their high school.

“We talked about it in school and got a couple people to join,” said another student-founder Michael Malinowski. “At first it wasn’t a big success, but once people started seeing what we were doing and how good it felt, more people wanted to help.”

The popularity of the club continues to rise.

“This whole thing started one year ago,” South Park science teacher Mike Hovey said. “Four guys came up with one idea and it was to make this park a little better. As you can see by looking around, four guys make a huge difference.”

The Buffalo Sabres Blue & Gold Make Green Initiative will be present at other Earth Day 2008 celebrations throughout the week. To learn more about these events, click here for more information.
