POMMER\'S BLOG: SEASON OPENER

We have the rest of the week to prepare for the season opener, and it’s time to get to work.

Today was a pretty tough practice, but that can be a good thing. I think by having this week to get ready, it will definitely help us sharpen different areas of our game.

For instance, our power play has to do a better job. Our special teams are going to be so important this year.

We’ve also talked about playing well in our own end early on because we know by playing well defensively we will get our scoring opportunities.

It’s an area where we’ve talked about since the first day of training camp and we want to keep harping on it until we get it right- so facing a team like Detroit, who pays such close attention to details, was a good test on Sunday.

Their best players are probably their best defensive players as well. That’s what we want here.

We want everybody to have a focus on playing defense and the Red Wings are probably the best example in the League right now of that. That exhibition game definitely gave us a lot of help in gauging where our progress is and just seeing what a team like that is all about.

Now we just have to get things settled on our end.

We are all excited for Friday night’s game against the Canadiens. Everyone seems focused. Everyone seems prepared. We know we have a job to do this year and we know we have to be in the playoffs.

That is our goal and has been our goal since the start.

We are all in this together and want to make strides as a team. I think the organization has made strides in committing to different players and now it’s our turn to give back.
