Everyone is asking the same question lately. Are you surprised at the team’s strong start?

I’ll say this- We wanted to be better than we were last year. Since day one of training camp I think our first meeting was about having a good start.

Am I surprised that we have done that? No, because that was our focus.

But not losing a game yet in regulation and going 5-0-1? We may not have anticipated that.

Now that we are on a roll we want it to stay that way. I don’t think our attitude will change. We want to win and that’s our focus now.

There have already been some obstacles with three of our top forwards out (Tim Connolly, Paul Gaustad and Jochen Hecht) but guys are stepping up.

Thomas Vanek has obviously been playing extremely well for us. For him to have that many goals at key times is huge.

But different guys like Clarke MacArthur or even Andrej Sekera on defense have been making the difference when it counts. I don’t think they get a lot of credit but they have been playing really well, getting a lot of minutes and those are guys that have done a good job.

But more importantly, as a team, we have committed to playing well defensively and that’s why we’re having success.

That is going to be even more crucial with Craig Rivet out for a few weeks.

He’s definitely a big part of the team. He plays the power play, penalty kill and every situation.

But now it’s an opportunity for Paetsch to step in for us. He’s been keeping himself ready by working out after practice, going that extra mile and I’m kind of excited for him to step in.

Hopefully he can help us and we can stay on this role… and maybe surprise a few more people.

I’ve had a lot of E-mails lately, so I’ll answer a few questions:

Other than sports, what is the best thing you like about the city of Buffalo? Rick – Orchard Park, NY

The restaurants, the shopping… To be honest, I just like living here. It’s a nice area, I feel comfortable here and like everything about it.

Who is the best dancer on the team? Jocelyn – Buffalo, NY

I’d have to say myself.

No, I’m just kidding.

I don’t think I’ve been out dancing with the guys so I have no idea. I honestly don’t think I could say who the best is!

How do you stay so friendly with people when they are so demanding and ask such strange questions? Sheryl – Jamestown, NY

It’s just the way I interact with people. Sometimes they have funny questions, but if I can answer it I’ll do my best. If I can’t I’ll just say I can’t… like the dancing question. I just don’t think I can! It’s part of the game, the fans like it and as a player I don’t mind it. I think overall it’s actually pretty funny and a good thing to do.

What does the team watch on TV when they are working out or preparing for a game? Emily – Ottawa, ONT

Everyday it’s basically TSN. We walk in and it’s usually pretty early in the morning so we have SportsCenter and watch the highlights and whatever is going on. We’ve been keeping up with the Bills lately and the now the World Series.

What are you going to be for Halloween and what is the best costume you have seen? Nikki – Rochester, NY

I don’t know yet. We are going to have a little costume party, but I haven’t thought about it. I don’t know if I want to say what it is anyway, because if some of the guys read the blog they’re going to know.

As far as the best costume I’ve seen, I’d have to say was Tim Connolly’s a few years ago. He dressed as Chris Drury in the Little League World Series. He had the uniform and the hat and it was actually pretty funny, so I’ll have to go with that.
