NCCYHA JV STEELERS SHOW THEIR HEART
Macho teenage hockey players wearing red and pink? Sure. When it s for a good cause.

The NCCYHA JV hockey team will be wearing special red jerseys with pink hearts and pink socks for the Red & Pink in the Rink ’09 event. The game is scheduled for this Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 1:15 p.m. at the Steele Hall Ice Arena SUNY Fredonia and benefits the fight against heart disease and breast cancer .The Steelers play rival North Tonawanda in a playoff game in pursuit of the championship.

“It all came to me in one week,” said Head Coach Bud Woloszyn, who was the inspiration for the event. “My father passed away from heart disease and my sister was unable to attend the funeral due to the cancer treatments she is receiving. I spoke to the boys and we decided this would be a good thing to do to bring awareness to people of these horrible diseases and raise money for research. These are such important causes to bring to the forefront and the boys and their parents were quickly on board to help make this a success.”

The idea to wear Red jerseys in honor and memory of those suffering from heart disease and pink socks to represent those who are affected by breast cancer was inspired by the Pink in the Rink game that the Fredonia State Blue Devils played. The Steelers decided to take that game and expand it to include heart disease.

The JV Steelers chose to wear pink socks to recognize all those who fight the brave battle against breast cancer every day and to take a moment and remember those who were not fortunate enough to survive the disease. The boys and their parents chose to partner with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The NCCYHA Steelers will be holding a chuck-a-puck contest at the conclusion of the game. Pucks will sell for one dollar a piece with all proceeds being split amongst the two charities listed prior. The JV Steelers will also be selling red and pink paper pucks to hang on the wall of the arena. Individuals may purchase these pucks and fill in the name of someone they choose to honor, remember and support in their fight for the cure.

“This is a great service project for the boys,” said Coach Woloszyn. “It allows them to do something to help. It is believed that each and every family on this team has been touched in one way or another by either or both of these diseases. “We wanted to do this for our coaches Dad, and to raise money for other people who have these illnesses,” said team member Dan Whitcher. “We hope a lot of people will come out and show their support.”

The Red and Pink in the Rink game starts at 1:15 this Saturday. Representatives from both charities will be on hand to talk to people and share in this special game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink or red to the game to show their support for these causes. Come out and support the Steelers in their quest for a championship and a cure.
