ST. FRANCIS JV RED RAIDERS: ALMOST THE PERFECT SEASON
Friday, 02.27.2009 / 10:10 AM / Amateur Hockey
The St. Francis High School JV Red hockey squad goes undefeated in the Southtowns High School Club Hockey League with a regular season record of 17-0-1. Combining high-flying offense, outstanding defense, and remarkable goaltending from Matt Hanley and Curran McNamara, the Red Raiders scored a total of 128 goals had 9 shutouts.
Finishing in second place in the standings was Orchard Park, who was 9 points behind St. Francis.
The "perfect season" came to an end in the third-to-last game of the season, when West Seneca West tied the Red Raiders at one a piece.
The playoffs were no different as far as success was concerned, as St. Francis defeated West Seneca West in the semi-finals. The score was 4-1.
JV Red capped off their final game with another 4-1 victory versus Orchard Park. Goal Scorers were Mike Menard, Matt Carrig, Dominic DiCiccio, and Brendan Cullen.
As Matt Hanley and Dominic DiCioccio skated over to accept the championship trophy, cheers could be heard throughout the stands at Leisure Rinks.
The team was also involved in another championship game a few weeks prior to this one. JV Red played in the Brother James Memorial Hockey Tournament at Gilmour Academy, located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
JV Red narrowly made it to the finals, but they could not pull off a win to take home the hardware.
Wednesday, February 25th, was a date that will stick in the heads of every player who put on those jerseys. Who knows if they will have another opportunity to play on an undefeated championship team ever?
To be honest, there is no feeling quite like it.
