SOUTHTOWN STARS FINISH IN TOP 4 FOR NY STATE
The Southtowns Stars Pee Wee Major hockey team finished off a great year by qualifying for, and competing in the New York State Championship Tournament, losing in the semi-finals. The Stars compiled a 31-13- 4 overall record and were 13-1-2 in WNYAHL league play. In the State Championships, held in Newburgh New York, the Stars represented Western New York well by easily defeating it first two opponents. The first win was a 8-0 blanking of the Auburn Ice Hawks. Brandon Bork had a natural hat trick (total of four goals) in the game while Pat Ciancio netted two goals, and Colin Coppola and Ryan Pyc chipped in one each, Brian Jordan earned the shutout in goal. The second game was a 7-1 victory over the Watertown Rapids. Bork had two goals again this game and the Stars got two goals from Brandon Swierczynski, and one each from Matt Wagner, Jeff Avolio, and Pat Ciancio. Justin DiChristopher was solid in the nets, only allowing the one late goal.

The Stars fought hard, butwere defeated in the third game of the qualifying round 6-2 by Hudson Valley. The 2-1 record was good enough to qualify the Stars for a semi final round game. The semi-final game was against the Long Island Edge. It was one of the best games you will ever see. The game ended in a 2-2 tie after regulation, with each team registering 18 shots on goal. The score was unchanged after the 5 minute overtime period, which took the game into a shootout. Neither team was about to give in as the shooters and goalies battled back and forth for both teams, and finally, after 12 shooters from each team had taken their attempts to win the game, the Edge squeaked in a goal to prevail. The Long Island Edge went on to win the State Championship. Congratulations to the Stars on a great year!
