CLASSIC CLIP OF THE WEEK: DAVE HANNAN

There are some goals that are bigger than the game.

In Dave Hannan’s case, a single goal may have been bigger than an entire playoff series.

Because while the Buffalo Sabres eventually lost in seven games to the New Jersey Devils in 1994, the legacy of Hannan’s quadruple overtime goal in Game 6 is far more enduring than the outcome.

The Sabres finished the 1993-94 regular season with a 43-32-9 record, claiming the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

the third-seeded New Jersey Devils posed a problem for Buffalo who had gone 1-3 against them on the year.

the Devils featured power forward Scott Stevens, a pair of tough defensemen in Scott Niedermayer and Ken Daneyko and a young goaltender by the name of Martin Brodeur.  And although Buffalo came out strong, winning the first game 2-0, they quickly fell to a 2-1 deficit in the series.  The Sabres rebounded to win  Game 4 to tie it at two games a-piece, but lost Game 5 in a 5-3 decision.

Game 6 would take a different turn.

Dominik Hasek and Brodeur provided a goaltending showcase that featured 125:43 minutes of shutout hockey (Hasek made 70 saves in the win). The Sabres and Devils battled through four overtime periods before Hannan finally broke through at Memorial Auditorium.

the source of the goal as much as the drama behind it made it so memorable, as Hannan had only scored eight goals and 21 points throughout the course of the 1993-94 season. In the first five games of the playoffs, he had yet to register a point.

To this day, the 1-0 contest that ended at 1:52 a.m. stands among the NHL’s longest games of all time, ranking 11th in League history.

But perhaps what made it even more of a classic moment was the renowned call from Rick Jeanneret:

“Dave Hannan is mobbed by his teammates! Dave Hannan finally put away the backhand! And this series is going back to where Jimmy Hoffa is! Back to the meadowlands in New Jersey!”

The Devils went on to beat Buffalo 2-1 in the deciding game, moving on to face the Boston Bruins.

To many, however, it is the goal from Hannan that makes this clip a classic.
