CLASSIC CLIP OF THE WEEK: THE DOMINATOR

His style has been described as unorthodox. His intensity - unparalleled.

But for the most part during his tenure with the Buffalo Sabres, Dominik Hasek was simply unstoppable.

The goaltender was in the apex of his career during the 1997-98 campaign, setting franchise records and personal-highs in games played (72), minutes played (4,220) and shutouts (13). In one of his most successful seasons in the NHL, Hasek captured the Vezina, Lester B. Pearson and Hart trophies – becoming the first goaltender to win the MVP award in consecutive years.

And while there were countless moments in that season the hat Hasek displayed brilliance in net, there was one save in particular that lives on as a classic.

On April 13, 1998, the Sabres were tied 1-1 against Philadelphia in the second period, with the Flyers sustaining pressure. Curtis Brown accepted the puck near Buffalo’s blueline before Chris Therien labeled him along the boards, sending the puck to Alexandre Daigle.

Daigle skated into the slot and ripped a backhand on net. Hasek stopped the initial shot but Flyers collected the rebound. Trent Klatt snapped a quick shot in the crease, but it was too late as Hasek dove across the crease to deliver one his most acrobatic saves to date.

Rick Jeanneret cemented the clip in Sabres history with a memorable call, as the Flyers raised their hands in anticipation of a goal that failed to come to fruition.

The Sabres went on to defeat the Flyers 2-1 at HSBC Arena, with a game-winning goal from Michael Grosek.

Hasek and the Sabres also went on to beat Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals that year in a 4-1 series win.
