SYLVESTER'S BLOG: DEV CAMP

Big is the overall impression I took from spending most of last week at Sabres Development Camp.

Not the stature of the event, but the overall size of the Sabres prospects. Everybody knows Tyler Myers is big at 6-8, but he also has some muscle to him, hopes to add some more and should with maturity.

New first round pick Zack Kassian, despite not skating due a foot injury, was imposing with his build and a handshake that has the potential to rival Jim Schoenfeld’s (those who have locked mitts with Schony’s right know what I mean).

Marcus Foligno is just plain huge for a 17 year old, and extremely polite.  Third-round pick Brayden McNabb is also imposing on skates for a young player and has more room to fill out.  Those are the newbies.

“Old” prospects T.J. Brennan and Dennis Persson are not tiny on the blue line.  Brennan was working hard on his offensive skills knowing that may get him to the NHL faster.  Let’s not forget that Mike Weber and Marc-Andre Gragnani were also in attendance and contribute to the size factor.

And I will throw one more guy in the big mix, Nathan Gerbe.  That’s right, the shortest man there.  Gerbe could be the strongest pound for pound player in the system.  I watched him work a bit in the weight room and it seemed like a breeze for him.

Let’s hope all this size translates into big things for the franchise, in the other meaning of the word.
