This is a short thought on Patrick Kane. He screwed up. It has and will continue to cost him. He learned a lesson the hard way.
Here is something that I have not read or heard anywhere: Patrick Kane and his cousin actually did a smart thing by taking a cab after a night on the Chippewa Strip.
Too bad that fact has been lost in the stupidity of the whole thing.
Olympic orientation camps are underway in Chicago for Team USA and Calgary for Team Canada. The insurance issue with the NHLPA was cleared up for players to participate in the camps.
My guess is most players would have laced them up without the insurance to show their dedication and desire to win a gold medal. However, you have to wonder how hard the players will “go” in the workouts to impress Steve Yzerman (Canada) and Brian Burke (USA) respectively.
A player's obligation is to his NHL team first and then to his country. Plus the GM’s know all of the players invited and what they can or can’t do. Therefore, the competition shouldn’t be that fierce this week.
The next three weeks could get interesting in the NHL as we head to training camp. There are still plenty of free agents to be signed at what will likely be bargain prices. I expected more trades this summer, but it seems everything hinges on Dany Heatley or Phil Kessel being dealt. Once we find out what either of those players is worth in return, then the trade market could open.
Training camp opens September 12th! The garage is still a mess.
