Now that the pre-season is over, it’s time for the hockey department to decide who makes the opening night roster.  As I write this I’m sure the decisions have already been made, but here goes anyway.

This would be my roster (laid out by lines):

FORWARDS:

Vanek -- Roy -- Stafford
MacArthur -- Connolly -- Pomminville
Hecht -- Gaustaud -- Grier
Paille -- Ellis -- Kaleta

Reserves:  Kennedy
Injured Reserve:
  Mair

DEFENSE:

Rivet -- Butler
Lydman -- Tallinder
Sekera -- Montador

Reserves:  Myers, Paetsch

GOALTENDERS:
Miller
Lalime

There is nothing ground breaking there.

The injury to Adam Mair gave me an extra spot for a week or two.  I used that to keep Tim Kennedy and Tyler Myers for further evaluation.  If Mair was ready, then it would be a tough decision.  I could have easily sent Kennedy back to Portland to work on faceoffs, but wouldn’t he be better working in practice up here against NHL centers?

Besides, I think he earned the roster spot.  He was good, not great, but good.  I also like his work ethic and having a young player-pushing veteran forwards is a good thing.  It would make sitting an underperforming veteran easier with a player of his caliber.  Nathan Gerbe made a great late push, but Kennedy is more versatile to Lindy Ruff’s system.

As for Tyler Myers, I want to see him in real game action and I have nine games to do it.   That will mean one the top six will sit to start the season while the big fella gets the ice.  Nathan Paetsch is a great team guy, knows his role, can bring some offense when in the lineup, and can even play forward if needed.

Don’t ask what happens when Adam Mair is ready to come off of the injured list.  I don’t have to make that decision yet and it will likely come shortly before the time a decision has to be made on Tyler Myers

Now let’s wait for the news release on the roster and see how I did.
