The Time Warner Cable Classic Rink is now open to the public. Located at 123 Riley Street in East Aurora, the outdoor ice facility is available for its second winter season.

Last year, the rink hosted thousands of skating enthusiasts for amateur hockey, figure skating, public skating sessions, and learn-to-skate programs.  The rink also hosted guests from Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Ohio to experience the history of the Winter Classic tribute rink.

The rink was originally used in the historic NHL Winter Classic event that was played on January 1, 2008 between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins.  This game, hosted at Ralph Wilson Stadium, was the first ever-outdoor NHL game in the United States.  A record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed the Penguins defeat the Sabres  2-1 with a dramatic overtime goal by Sidney Crosby.

According to John Cimperman, president of the Aurora Ice Association (AIA), “The Winter Classic event has earned its place in hockey history. This legacy will continue to have its home in East Aurora.”

Cimperman added that the rink is nearly 90 percent booked for the 2009-10 season, which runs though March.

Public skating sessions are every Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. and every Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.  The price is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Skate rentals are also available.

Additionally, the rink is practice home to four local hockey associations; the East Aurora High School Hockey Club team, as well as the popular Old Tyme Hockey League consisting of 12 adult hockey teams.

The Winter Classic Tribute rink has the support of the National Hockey League and Buffalo Sabres.  Their support of the rink project allowed AIA to brand the venue to be a replica of the Winter Classic Rink at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
