The 24-hour deadline has come and gone for Adam Mair and the verdict is that forward will remain in Buffalo.

Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced Monday that the 30-year-old veteran had been placed on waivers due to the amount of forwards on the roster. With no team opting to claim him before the deadline [by noon today], Mair will stay on the squad.

The Sabres did have the option of sending him to the AHL Portland Pirates but Head Coach Lindy Ruff said he will continue to act as the extra forward in Buffalo.

“It’s numbers, it’s a tough situation,” Ruff said. “We’ve made some decisions. We like the way [Tim] Kennedy has played, with Mike Grier coming in the right side and Pat Kaleta the way he’s played, it makes the decisions tough.”

Mair has played in three games this season after missing the first four contests recovering from arthroscopic hip surgery and has been a healthy scratch for seven games.

He practiced with the team at the Amherst Pepsi Center on Tuesday, alongside Pat Kaleta, Paul Gaustad and Matt Ellis.

“It’s tough to have three guys sitting around. It really is,” Ruff said. “Most teams will have one guy, possibly two [sitting out] and then you just bring a guy up from the minors.

“We’ve been lucky so far with injuries. There have been a lot throughout the League, but he’s probably an injury away from playing.”
