The Buffalo Sabres announced today Grant Ledyard has been named Director of Youth Hockey Development. In this capacity, Ledyard will continue to serve in the dual role of Head Coach/GM of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, a position he has held for the past two seasons. In his first season behind the bench in 2008-09, Ledyard led the Jr. Sabres to their first winning season in eight years.

Ledyard’s primary focus as Director of Youth Hockey Development will be maintaining the Sabres’ ongoing commitment to youth hockey in Western New York through the hosting of several clinics at HSBC Arena throughout the hockey season. Beginning in late December, the Sabres will be holding a variety of hockey fundamentals and skill development clinics. Ledyard will also be involved in the planning and execution of the Bowman Cup, along with the high school hockey championships that will take place at HSBC Arena on Sunday, February 28.

Ledyard is a veteran of 1,028 NHL games, including four seasons with the Sabres from 1989-1993. He played 240 games in the blue and gold, collecting 89 points (18+71) and 181 PIMs. Ledyard came to Buffalo in a trade with Washington on March 6, 1989. The Sabres acquired Ledyard, Clint Malarchuk and a sixth-round draft choice in 1991 (Brian Holzinger), in exchange for Calle Johansson and a second-round choice (Byron Dafoe). Ledyard’s 18-year career started with the New York Rangers in 1984, and also included stops in Los Angeles, Washington, Vancouver, Boston, Ottawa and Tampa Bay.

The 47-year-old Ledyard is a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, but now makes his home in Buffalo. Ledyard can be reached via email at grant.ledyard@sabres.com.
