Patrick Kaleta was given a maintenance day on Monday afternoon according to Head Coach Lindy Ruff - recovering from some minor ‘soreness’ stemming from Saturday night’s 5-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

The winger is expected to play Wednesday night against the Capitals and was the only player absent from the hour-long workout at HSBC Arena. Drew Stafford participated in the skate, as did Mike Grier who Ruff said is getting closer to a return to the lineup.

“I think it really depends on how it feels tomorrow,” Ruff said. “The fact that he made it through the whole practice was good. We just have to see where he’s at when it comes to fitness and how much he can tolerate.”

Grier has missed the last five games with a groin strain that he suffered Nov. 11 in a game against the Edmonton Oilers.

The lines from Monday’s workout are as follows:

MacArthur – Connolly – Stafford
Vanek – Roy – Pominville
Hecht – Kennedy – Grier – Mair
Gaustad – Ellis – Paetsch

Ruff also discussed the mentality behind using defenseman Andrej Sekera as a forward in Ottawa, alongside Matt Ellis and Adam Mair.

Drew Stafford was out with a 'bone bruise,' causing the Sabres to be short a forward.

“I liked him in practice. I wanted to take a look,” Ruff said. “He’s got better speed. I thought that line really played well for us and he ended up having two scoring chances. I asked him why he looked so good in practice, he said he used to be a forward and I didn’t know that. Part of it was Andrej played pretty well before we took him out and I wanted to keep him going.”
