The Buffalo Sabres may find themselves short-handed for Wednesday night’s match-up against the Washington Capitals

Defenseman Andrej Sekera is listed as questionable for the contest with a bruised ankle he suffered during Monday’s 3-0 loss to New Jersey. The blueliner briefly skated, but was unable to stay for the duration of practice on Tuesday.

Nathan Paetsch, the team’s extra defenseman, is already playing up at forward due to the absences of Paul Gaustad [leg] and Mike Grier [family sickness]. Head Coach Lindy Ruff said the team hasn’t recalled anyone from the AHL Portland Pirates yet; “But it’s something we’re going to have to look at.”

The team completed an extended video session on Tuesday afternoon, followed by an hour-plus practice at HSBC Arena. Typically holding light practices on off-days that are sandwiched in between games, Ruff wanted to shake things up after the loss.

“It was a real clunker,” Ruff said. “We’re reviewing some of the areas I thought we fell down in… where our effort wasn’t good enough, and went out and practiced what I though would help us in a game.”

Ruff also changed a few line combinations, promoting Adam Mair to play alongside Tim Connolly and Thomas Vanek.

“I think he has fear that he doesn’t want to be out of the lineup again,” Ruff said of Mair, who was placed on waivers Nov. 9, but remained with the Sabres after clearing. “I think that really showed up in the effort category.”
