Andrej Sekera was formally added to the Slovakian roster today, joining teammate Henrik Tallinder - who was named to Team Sweden earlier this week - in making their Olympic debuts in Vancouver this February.
While Sekera already knew that he was a lock to make the team - discussing it last week in Montreal - Tallinder was a bit unsure.
The Stockholm native said that while he knew he was in consideration, he thought he hurt his chances by previously turning down participation in two World Championships with the team.
“I thought maybe they had a couple guys that said yes [in the past] ahead of me, but I’m happy,” he said. “The Olympic games don’t come around that often. If there was a shot to make it, this was the year, so I’m happy to go.”
“He’s been playing great,” defensive partner Tyler Myers said. “He’s been a lot of help for me and the guys wish him all the best… He’s a great skater, has great hands and makes quick plays. He does things that I can learn from as a young player and big player. We’re all really happy for him.”
The blueliners may be joined by a few more Sabres’ teammates.
Team Canada, Finland, Czech Republic and Germany will announce their final rosters Dec. 30 while Team USA will announce its roster Jan. 1.
Toni Lydman played for Finland in the 2006 Winter Games, while Jochen Hecht has represented Germany in three Olympic tournaments (1998, 2002, 2006). As for Team USA, Ryan Miller will likely be the starting goaltender, while Paul Gaustad and Tim Connolly have been in the mix and under consideration. Derek Roy has also been under consideration for Team Canada
