BTB: MYERS FOR CALDER?

As for the writers’ second Blue-and-Gold player in the running - while it may not fall under the category of shocking - if Tyler Myers did claim the Calder Trophy as the writers have predicted, the feat would undeniably be impressive.
“Making it as a rookie defenseman is a grueling assignment, but halfway through the season, the Buffalo Sabres' Tyler Myers is looking like he has been on the blue line for years. He has contributed offensively with 4 goals and 19 assists and is a plus-8 in 23 minutes per game. Not shabby stuff for a 19-year-old who had to be considered for an Olympic berth.”
Grueling doesn’t being to describe it. Since the award’s inception in the 1932-33 season, only nine defensemen have ever taken the hardware home for Rookie of the Year - including caliber players such as Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque and Brian Leetch.
It’s no knock against the defensemen in the League, but typically offense is hard to ignore. As the season began, much of the talk went to the Islanders’ John Tavares and Colorado’s Matt Duchene as they lit up the scoreboard. However, as the year has progressed, both have experienced growing pains where Myers has improved.
Impossible? No. Significant? Yes.
Only two other players in franchise history have every captured the award. Gilbert Perreault claimed it in the Sabres’ inaugural season (1970-71) as did Tom Barrasso in the 1983-84 campaign.
