♦   An excellent series between the Blackhawks and Flyers.  The only thing that would have made it better was if the Sabres were in and won.

♦   What is all the talk about Patrick Kane’s Cup winning goal not being aesthetically pleasing enough?  Really?  Kane made a great move along the wall and scored from a tough angle in OT to win the Cup.  I guess he should have made his way to the high slight, nudging aside Chris Pronger to get there, and then rip a wrister top shelf over the glove of Michael Leighton.  It just shows that people have to find something to complain about (just as I am complaining about people complaining about the lack of beauty of the goal).

♦   The Blackhawks and Flyers are both in reported salary cap trouble for next season.  My guess is, Chicago doesn’t care all that much right now and Philly does.   And before you get worked up about raiding the Blackhawks roster, remember that the reason they won the Cup is because the teams’ star players performed that way.  Patrick Kane, Con Smythe winner Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, and Duncan Keith were excellent.  That’s not to discount Antti Niemi and Dustin Byfuglien, but your stars have to be your stars to win.  The big question is, and that’s what GM’s around the league have to evaluate, did those other players help the star players perform to their potential or were they along for the ride.  Along with that, are some of the players on that roster ready to be stars elsewhere?

♦   The NHL’s two-week buy out period begins today.  It’ll be interesting to see which, if any, contracts are bought out.  It’s not a simple decision for teams.  Pay a player part of his salary to not play for you and lose some cap space in the process.  Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, unless the player simply cannot play anymore or is just an albatross for progress (see Alexi Yashin with the Islanders a few year ago).

♦   I saw Tim Kennedy the other day a charity golf event in Buffalo, and he said he had a good experience (despite the outcome) at the World Championships in Germany for Team USA.  He is also working out everyday now in preparation for this season.  When I think of how the team can get better next season, more from him comes to mind after a solid rookie campaign.

♦   Congrats to former Sabres player and assistant Scott Arniel on being named head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.  GM Scott Howson made a great choice.  I hope that Arny gives Randy Cunneyworth a call - who is currently looking for work after Atlanta made a change - to join his staff.

♦   And this tip from my experience during my recent vacation and trip to a water park with my kids; wear water shoes.
