Since a majority of the fuel emissions associated with the Draft result from transportation, the proximity of headquarters hotels and associated events to STAPLES Center is critical. The League offices and media room block are located at the JW Marriott, which is a mere 200 yards from the arena in the L.A. Live complex. The League Draft party will take place in Nokia Plaza, the central meeting place for L.A. Live. And the Top Prospects Media Availability and Media Reception are being held at Target Terrace in L.A. Live.
What's more, 60 percent of all Clubs and League personnel are staying at hotels within walking distance of STAPLES Center.
Inside the arena during the Draft's two days, a number of recyclable trash containers will be added to the total that already made STAPLES Center one of the most environmentally-friendly arenas in the nation. The use of paper will be significantly reduced by making Entry Draft media guides available only online. And all required copying will be done on recycled paper.
In addition, all signage and billboards will be constructed of 100 percent recycled material. E-tickets were sent to Kings season-ticket holders. All food and beverage containers at arena concession stands will be recyclable, with any prepared but unused food donated to the Midnight Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles.
"The NHL should be commended for using its global visibility to help alert the world about the need to do something about global warming and other environmental issues," said NRDC Senior Scientist Dr. Allen Hershkowitz. "The NHL Draft is watched by millions of young fans and vendors clamor to be part of it. What better way to introduce new players to the NHL than by alerting them to the League's responsible commitment to environmental stewardship?"
The efforts to be made at the NHL Entry Draft continue a process formally begun with the establishment of NHL Green on May 20. At the recent Stanley Cup Final, the League replaced 30,000 plastic shopping bags with reusable bags at both host arenas and at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in New York City. The bags sold out during the first two games in each arena – Chicago's United Center and Philadelphia's Wachovia Center.
