The Buffalo Sabres Green Team set up a table in the pavilion of HSBC Arena during the Sabres’ matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team partnered up with the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo and handed out car window stickers and coupons for Green T-Shirts in hopes of recruiting Green Team members.
“We want to spread awareness,” said the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s Communications Director, Betsy Murrett. “A lot of people are members of the Green Team, even if they don’t know it, so we want to remind people that every little bit helps. By getting in front of the Sabres’ audience, we hope to persuade them to make smarter decisions in our environment.”
The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo teamed up with the Sabres to promote its Web site, GROWWNY.org. The Web site, which stands for Green Renaissance of Western New York, can be used as a local resource for everything green in Western New York including: environmental information, green living tips, volunteer opportunities and outdoor hiking maps.
“There is so much we can do in Western New York. We have a wealth of natural resources, but they’re going to disappear if we don’t take care of them. It’s really important that everyone knows they can do their part in recycling, riding their bike, or even just spreading the word,” said Murrett.
The organization had some fun while promoting their cause, as they took pictures of Sabre fans who signed up for the Green Team. The fans wrote on a portable board an environmental tip they could come up with, while their picture was snapped to be posted on the Web site.
“We are encouraging people to make a green pledge, just something simple and small that they can do in their life to be a little bit greener,” said the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s Special Projects Associate, Johanna Hess. “We will then post the pictures online so other people can see everyone’s pledge and maybe get some new ideas and see what everyone’s doing.”
Along with GROWWNY.org, The Buffalo Sabres Green Team event was sponsored by National Fuel, who has been a big supporter to help the Sabres’ efforts to go green and conserve energy. This event was the second of six that will be set up for the Buffalo Sabres Green Team throughout the 2010-11 season.
“We’re trying to influence people to make changes in their lives and become more aware of what they can do and the importance of taking some action. We can inspire and teach fans how to do it, and the more people we can get to help, the more we can make a difference,” said Sabres Manager of Community Development, Rich Jureller.
