NOTEBOOK: THANKSGIVING DAY SKATE
The Sabres took part in a Thanksgiving Day practice at HSBC Arena on Thursday.  Jhonas Enroth, who tied his season-high with 28 saves in Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Pittsburgh, was not with the team, leaving Ryan Miller and Patrick Lalime to man the nets.  Miller has missed the last two games with a groin injury and put in some extra work after Thursday’s practice session.

“(Ryan) is going to get a little extra work in after practice, so we’ll see where he’s at.  If he’s ready we’re gonna use him,” Lindy Ruff said in reference to tomorrow’s game versus Toronto.

Ruff added that Enroth was returned to Portland of the AHL, but could return on Friday if the team needed him.

Derek Roy missed several shifts in last night’s game after taking a shot off the elbow, and then experienced problems with his vision during the third period.  On Thursday, Ruff said the elbow was still sore and that the vision issue was due to an ocular migraine.  Ruff was hopeful his leading scorer would be ready to play on Friday.

Ruff also spoke about all the factors involved in utilizing different line combinations last night.  Tim Connolly (groin) and Rob Niedermayer (knee) were both out of the lineup and replaced by Colin Stuart and Luke Adam.  With Roy missing time and Paul Gaustad serving a double minor for roughing during the first period, he was forced to use different combinations throughout the game.

“When you look at it, you don’t know what is going to work,” he said.  “We looked at the matchups of (Evgeni) Malkin and (Sidney) Crosby being on different lines, and trying to have some size and some stiffness against them where we could hang on to pucks and maybe outmuscle them.  I thought that part of our game was good. We limited those guys to some pretty weak opportunities.  I thought Stuart gave us a surprisingly good game.  When players don’t play with each other you hope it works. I liked what I saw.”
