WNY GOING GREEN: REACT
There is now a proper way to dispose your old electronics.

Recycling Electronics and Computer Technologies (REACT) is a company in Horseheads, NY, whose objective is to rid the landfills of toxic waste by handling old electronic devices properly.

“From computers and printers to video games, we recycle any type of electronic devices we can get our hands on,” said REACT’s president, Skip Starr.  “We dismantle products into plastics or metals before we send them out, so they can be re-used.”

The company was started in 2005 after Starr recognized the need for such a service from his former employer.  After researching the environment and how to carefully re-use old electronics, Starr put all of his attention toward starting REACT.

“I actually have a background in marketing, and I figured out that my previous employer had an excess of old electronics and had not a clue what to do with them,” recalled Starr.  “After finding the situation, I did a lot of research and realized that I can start a business that helps the environment.”

Starr used his marketing degree to the max in the beginning as he worked hard to have REACT approved as a dismantler and recycler of used electronics by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).  After Starr’s business met all federal and state regulations, he started another project at REACT, as the company, in accordance with its mission statement, continued to “search for new ways to become more efficient and environmentally-friendly .”

“We have the largest hard-drive shredder in New York, so if a corporation or resident is hesitant to recycle old hard drives, now they can breathe a sigh of relief,” said Starr.  “Our shredder completely destroys all of the computer’s information, so the data can never be retrieved.”

REACT’s quest to help dispose of electronics while improving the environment could not be accomplished without the help of the local community.  Starr appreciates all the help he has received and he encourages people with old electronics to take care of them responsibly.

“The community has been a big help with our mission.  I get customers from Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and of course, New York.  Many homes and corporations are more environmentally (friendly), so it’s great to see that support,” said Starr.
