The Buffalo Sabres, National Fuel and the Green Team stepped up their efforts to help Western New York Go Green as a Technology Recycling Day was held at HSBC Arena on Monday, December 6.

Fans were invited to bring in their old electronics in an effort to recycle  in a responsible manner.  The team partnered with Sun King Electronics Recycling, a recycling business that properly disposes of scrap electronic parts .  They specialize not only in e-scrap recycling, but also have the ability to find value in nearly all used electronic equipment.

“We’re a Rochester-based company with locations here in Buffalo and Lancaster. We have been doing electronic recycling for more than 11 years,”   said Sun King’s president, Duane Beckett.  “Electronic scrap is the fastest growing waste stream that we have today.  There’s a real need because you don’t want the material going into the landfill due to the heavy metals that don’t break down.”

The event not only helped the environment, but also contributed to a great cause.  Sun King plans to give back to Western New York in appreciation for the community’s generosity and support by re-selling some of the equipment or parts and donating proceeds to the Buffalo Sabres Foundation.

“We secure all of our recyclables by shredding all hard drives, and we do not export unprocessed materials overseas, which we are very proud of.  We are also proud of the recycling percentage we accomplish with the material. Right now, less than four percent of the material goes into the waste stream but the rest of it is recycled and processed in one commodity or another,” said Beckett.

Technology Recycling Day did not start the way sponsoring parties had hoped, as Buffalo was hit with a snow storm and a fast-blowing wind.  However, the good nature of the area residents and Sabres fans pulled through, resulting in a successful turnout for the Buffalo Sabres Green Team event.   Green Team members are people who take aim at saving electricity, recycling and conserving energy in manageable and cost-effective ways.

“The community responded better than I thought they would due to the weather,” said Beckett.

The Buffalo Sabres and Sun King would like to thank all of the fans who participated in the event.
