The Buffalo Sabres announced today that they will team up with National Fuel and the Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER to clean up the Ohio Street Boat Launch in Buffalo on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

After the clean-up is over, there will be a volunteer picnic from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at American Legion Niagara Frontier Post 1041 (533 Amherst Street) and a post-event Boom Days Party at Dug’s Dive beginning at 6 p.m. with fireworks around 9 p.m.

“We are looking forward to an exciting spring both on and off the ice in Buffalo,” Sabres President Ted Black said. “Our spring clean-up day is a great opportunity for Sabres fans around Western New York to get outside and make a difference in the community.”

Sabres Green Team members and all others can visit www.sabres.com to register to volunteer for the event. Anyone interested in becoming a Sabres Green Team member can also do so online at www.sabres.com.

"As an energy company, it is our priority to provide our customers with safe and reliable service," National Fuel spokesperson Karen L. Merkel said. "As a company that is ingrained within the communities where our employees live and work, it is our privilege to play an active role and Green Team events allow us hands on involvement.  The Spring Clean-up provides volunteers with a reason to get outside after a long winter and do something that is good for them and good for the environment at the same time."

For more than a decade, Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER has been joined by thousands of volunteers twice a year to remove trash, litter and heavy debris from Western New York shorelines, waterfront parks and wetlands.

“The Buffalo Sabres and National Fuel are helping Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER make a power play for our rivers,” said Julie Barrett O’Neill, Executive Director of the Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER. “We are delighted to partner with them and the dedicated Buffalo Sabres Green Team Volunteers for our Spring Shoreline Sweep.”

While the Sabres Green Team is at the boat launch, there will be about 40 other sites being cleaned up throughout the Buffalo/Niagara region as a part of the annual Spring Shoreline Sweep.

The Spring Shoreline Sweep is an important event, because it helps improve the quality of the water in Western New York’s streams, creeks and rivers. The trash and debris that will be cleaned up is not only unsightly, but it degrades habitat and water quality for fish and wildlife, and can have a human health impact as well. Broken glass, metal and plastic can be hazards to fishermen, boaters and beach combers. Most importantly, the area’s drinking water comes from the Great Lakes. There is a clear connection between the water in the lakes and the water that comes from Western New York’s faucets. Cleaning up the water improves drinking water for Buffalo/Niagara residents and others downstream.

The Spring Clean-up program is the latest “green” initiative that the Sabres have implemented this season in an effort to make Western New York a better place to live. So far this season, the Sabres Green Team has worked to impact the Western New York community through various green programs and initiatives including a tree planting day, technology recycling program and the Rock & Wrap It Up program, which distributes food from HSBC Arena events to the Buffalo City Mission.

The Sabres Green Team, established in 2007 and is designed to educate, inform and activate Sabres fans who wish to make a difference in their local community, is presented by National Fuel’s Conversation Incentive Program and proudly supported by our green partners: Chautauqua Energy, Modern Recycling and Integrys Energy.
