The New Jersey Devils scored twice in the first 5:21 and never looked back, defeating the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 at First Niagara Center on Wednesday. The loss snapped Buffalo’s three-game home winning streak, and it was also the first regulation defeat for Jhonas Enroth in almost a year.

Enroth was 13-0-1 in his last 14 decisions, with his last loss coming on November 24, 2010 against Pittsburgh. Jordan Leopold said none of the blame for the loss should rest on Enroth, who allowed all five goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Drew MacIntyre late in the third period.

“You can’t blame it on [Enroth],” Leopold stated. “We came out flat.”

A bright spot for Buffalo in the loss was the play of defenseman Tyler Myers, back in the Sabres lineup after being benched for the first time in his professional career on Monday in Montreal. Myers responded with the second two-goal game of his career, while also creating several other offensive chances by moving the puck effortlessly up the like he did during his first two seasons.

“I thought Tyler skated well, got up in the play ... He had a little bit of edge to him too, which was nice.” - Lindy Ruff on Tyler Myers
But the most encouraging sign was how Myers played physically, highlighted by a thunderous bodycheck along the boards on Dainius Zubrus in the second period.

“I think playing more physical is what ultimately helped my game. Playing that tough in the zone is what gets me in the game a lot more,” Myers explained. “I’m gonna have to find way to do that every night. Obviously there are going to be nights when fatigue is going to set in, and it’s going to be harder to play that physical for a full 60. It’s something that I really have to bring back into my game.”

Lindy Ruff was very complimentary of his young blueliner.

“I thought Tyler skated well, got up in the play, and made obviously an excellent shot getting up. But he was in on four or five other opportunities. I thought he probably skated as well as he's skated. He had a little bit of edge to him too, which was nice.”

NOTES: Leopold scored Buffalo’s other goal … Just like Monday in Montreal, Ruff made some personnel moves during the game. He bumped Brad Boyes up to the second line to center Ville Leino and Drew Stafford; while dropping Luke Adam to the fourth line with Matt Ellis and Corey Tropp … MacIntyre played 7:58 in the third, his first NHL action since January, 2008 with Vancouver.
