NOTHING BRUIN FOR SABRES

It only took 83 seconds for the game’s expected fireworks to take place. Eleven days removed from Milan Lucic’s hit on Ryan Miller in Boston, Paul Gaustad responded when he squared off with Lucic in front of the Bruins net in the first period.
“It was an unfortunate incident in Boston. I give credit to Milan for fighting. It’s something guys don’t have to, but he did,” said Gaustad. “And it was something that, myself, I wanted to step up after I thought I could’ve done more in the Boston game. We’ve moved on from that point in Boston, and I think we’ve become a better team because of it.”
Despite the loss, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff was pleased with his team’s effort in the much-hyped return match with the Bruins.
“I said this morning that we wanted to be hard in a lot of situations. I was happy with how we played.
“We worked hard. When you have six or seven guys out of the lineup, and we lose (Brad) Boyes, I think you’re going to give up some opportunities.”
Boyes went down with what appeared to be an ankle injury early in the second period. After struggling to regain his footing, he hobbled to the bench at the whistle. Ruff said after the game that he expects Boyes to miss a “period of time.” Boyes was playing in his 513th consecutive game tonight and has never missed a game due to injury in his NHL career.
The Sabres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Christian Ehrhoff and Thomas Vanek. Tyler Seguin cut the lead in half early in the second, before rookie TJ Brennan restored Buffalo’s two-goal cushion with his first career NHL goal in his first career game.
Brennan describes his milestone goal.
“Roysie made a good play coming up the wall, so I figured I could sneak down. The next thing you know the puck’s up there. Before I could think about it I just took a shot, and
The next thing you know all the guys are grabbing my face. I think I blacked out there for a second. - TJ Brennan”
Brennan is the first Sabres defenseman to score in his NHL debut since Lindy Ruff did it on October 11, 1979 against Washington.
Brad Marchand got Boston back within one late in the second, and Zdeno Chara evened the score at 3-3 on the power play 3:35 into the third.
Tim Thomas made 31 saves in the victory, while Jhonas Enroth turned away 36 Boston shots in the loss and dropped to 7-2-1 on the season. It was also Enroth’s first career loss in six shootouts.
NOTES: Patrick Kaleta was a late scratch with a lower body injury. Ruff said he tried to work through it at practice this morning after taking yesterday off for a maintenance day, but he wasn’t feeling healthy enough to play tonight.
