SENATORS vs. SABRES
  • This is the third of six meetings between the Sabres and Senators this season.
  • Last meeting: Buffalo defeated Ottawa, 5-1, in Buffalo on Nov. 11.
  • The Sabres are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games vs. the Senators; 4-5-1 at home.
  • This is the 109th game all-time between Buffalo and Ottawa; Buffalo leads the series with a 55-39-14 record. Buffalo is 30-19-4 at home against the Senators all-time.
  • The two teams will next meet on Dec. 20 in Ottawa.
STORYLINES
  1. The Sabres are 8-1-0 in their last nine games against the Senators, including a 2-0-0 record against them so far this season and a 5-1-0 record in 2010-11.
  2. Buffalo has five players on IR and another three who sat out Saturday’s game with an injury. In all, 14 Sabres have missed at least one game with injury this season entering tonight's game. Buffalo’s total of 104 man games lost after 29 games is 35 more than they had at that point last season, but their record (15-12-2) is better than last year’s (12-13-4).
  3. Due to the injuries, nine rookies have seen action for the Sabres this season, one behind Philadelphia for the league lead. Five of these players made their NHL debut. Buffalo’s group of nine rookies is the highest total the team has dressed in a season since they had 10 in 2006-07, when seven players made their NHL debut. The Sabres’ 36 points (15+21) from rookies tie Ottawa for secondmost in the league behind Edmonton (38).
  4. Tonight’s game is the fourth in a five-game home stretch ending with a matchup with Toronto on Dec. 16 that will see the team play five games in 10 days. The home stand is the second of two five-game stints at home, the longest such stretches for the team this season. The Sabres went 2-3-0 during the first one, which ran from Oct. 25 to Nov. 4, and are 1-1-1 so far during this one.

SABRES REBOUNDING AGAINST SENS
Entering tonight’s game, the Sabres have won six straight games against the Senators. Buffalo went 5-1-0 against Ottawa last season, their best season series record against the Sens since the lockout. In two matchups this year, Buffalo is 2-0-0. From 2005-06 to 2009-10, the Sabres were just 10-21-3 against the Senators during the regular season.

Roy
HOMETOWN BOY
Derek Roy, an Ottawa native, is the Sabres’ leading scorer against the Senators with 35 points (14+21) in 41 games played. Roy has tallied four points (2+2) in two games against the Sens this year, and added the game-deciding goal in the shootout when the teams met on Nov. 5.

POPULATING POMINVILLE
Sabres captain Jason Pominville leads the Sabres with 31 points (10+21) and is on a three-game point streak (1+3). Pominville has recorded a point in 22 of Buffalo’s 29 games this season, only having gone two straight contests without a point one time. His four 3+ point games tie for third-most in the league. In December, Pominville has five points (1+4) in five games.

Buffalo’s 51 wins are the most the team has had in any month since the lockout. The Sabres are 51-28-9 (.631) in December in those years.

After Tony LaRussa (MLB) announced his retirement on Oct. 31, Ruff became the second-longest tenured coach in the four major professional sports leagues. Only Gregg Popovich, who began coaching the San Antonio Spurs in 1996, has been head coach of his team longer. Ruff has 541 wins as head coach of the Sabres, second-most by a head coach with a single franchise, trailing only Al Arbour (740). Ruff has more wins than any other coach with his first NHL team.
