Buffalo Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe has withdrawn from the IIHF World Championship due to a lower back injury. Gerbe is currently receiving treatment for the injury.

Buffalo Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe has withdrawn from the IIHF World Championship due to a lower back injury. Gerbe is currently receiving treatment for the injury.

Gerbe was one of 17 players originally named to the U.S. Men’s National Team on April 11, along with Jack Johnson, Bobby Ryan and Paul Stastny. However, his name was not included on an updated roster sent out this afternoon, and the Sabres confirmed tonight that he had withdrawn because of the lower back injury.

The 24-year-old native of Oxford, Michigan, missed 20 games in 2011-12 because of injury, including nine of Buffalo’s final 12 games with an upper body injury. Gerbe finished the year with 25 (6+19) points in 62 games for the Sabres.

Sixteen teams will compete at 2012 IIHF Men's World Championship scheduled for May 4-20 in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. There will be two groups of eight, with one group playing in Helsinki, and the other playing in Stockholm. The semifinals and medal games will be conducted in Helsinki. NBC Sports is scheduled to televise all games involving Team USA.
