GAME OF THE YEAR: MATCH-UP #1
Buffalo\'s victories over Anaheim & Toronto square off in the first match-up of the \'Game of the Year\' bracket.

Whether it’s a big goal or spectacular save, there are many moments throughout an NHL season that you will never forget. But they are just small parts of the bigger picture – the games themselves.

It doesn’t matter what time of year they are played, certain games will stick in your head for many reasons. Maybe it’s a high-scoring affair that was exciting from start to finish? Or could it be the fact that you waited all day in anticipation all day knowing that the outcome of that night’s game would affect your team’s potential playoff position? Whatever the reason, there are many games each season that fall into this category.

So with that in mind, we have selected our four favorite Sabres games of the 2011-12 season – and now it’s time for you to vote on them. After combing through the entire schedule, we were able to compile a list of our 15 top games. (It’s safe to say that list didn’t include any of the 12 road games that Buffalo played between December 17-January 21). Each of these four games had its own significance, and that’s how they made our final list.

Oh, and by the way: if you disagree with our choices – and that has been known to happen before – there’s a comments box on the bottom of the page. Feel free to use it. We don’t bite.

We’ll give you two today, and another pair tomorrow. Vote for the one you like best each day, and we’ll have the top two go head-to-head over the weekend. The winner will be announced on Monday.

APRIL 3, 2012 - BUFFALO 6, TORONTO 5 (OT)

“It’s never safe to count out the Buffalo Sabres. In a season in which they’ve already mounted a remarkable second-half surge to climb back into playoff contention, the Sabres showed yet another frantic flare for dramatics by overcoming a three-goal deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday night. Derek Roy sealed the win by scoring his second goal 3:29 into overtime after Alexander Sulzer and Jordan Leopold scored in the final 5:03 of regulation as the Sabres twice rallied from two-goal third-period deficits in a game they never led until the final score.”

FEBRUARY 29, 2012 - BUFFALO 2, ANAHEIM 0

“As the clock struck Midnight in the east, Buffalo’s push for the playoffs officially became a March. And it doesn’t look like they are going to ease up anytime soon. Ryan Miller turned aside all 43 shots he faced, including 20 in the third period, as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 2-0 in front of 14,972 onlookers at the Honda Center. Derek Roy’s first period goal was the game winner, and Brad Boyes added some insurance in the second period with his first goal since December 31. The Sabres are now 4-0-2 in their past six games, matching a season-high originally set during a 5-0-1 run from January 24-February 10. Wednesday’s victory was also Buffalo’s first on February 29 in 32 years.”
