SABRES-CAPS NEW YEAR’S EVE ’03 GAME UP NEXT IN MSG ‘CLASSIC’ SERIES
’76 Super Series broadcast will anchor Sabres programming on Christmas Eve
BUFFALO, N.Y. (December 13, 2012) --- The Buffalo Sabres today announced that MSG has scheduled a slate of Sabres programming on Monday nights leading up to the holidays with the premiere of another classic game on Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. The night’s episode will feature the Sabres’ New Year’s Eve game against the Washington Capitals in 2003 when Maxim Afinogenov and Miroslav Satan both netted hat tricks en route to a 7-1 blowout of Buffalo’s conference rival.
In addition to the hat tricks scored by Afinogenov and Satan, Sabres forward Andrew Peters scored his first NHL goal during the game at HSBC Arena. Peters will provide in-depth commentary throughout the two-hour telecast to give an added perspective to one of the most exciting games of the Sabres’ 2003-04 season.
Preceding the classic game broadcast on Dec. 17, MSG will re-air Buffalo Sabres: Rafters Club Roundtable, which is an in-depth interview with members of the Buffalo Sabres Rafters Club. The club is comprised of Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert, Danny Gare and LaFontaine, all of whom have had their jersey numbers retired by the organization. The legendary Sabres players sat down with Brian Duff to discuss a variety of topics, including their time playing in Buffalo, favorite moments in Sabres history and what it means to be ambassadors of the team.
The following Monday, Dec. 24, MSG will re-air the broadcast of the 1976 Super Series matchup between the Sabres and the Soviet Wings at 8 p.m. to anchor a slate of Sabres programming for Christmas Eve.
In this classic exhibition game, the Sabres defeated the visiting Soviet Wings by a score of 12-6, marking the only victory by an NHL team in the Wings’ four-game series in the United States. The game will feature special commentary from Gare, who tied Rick Martin to lead the Sabres with two goals in the win. Exclusive interviews from Martin, Jerry Korab and Peter McNab, filmed following the 1976 game, are also available to view on Sabres.com.
Following the ’76 Super Series broadcast, MSG will air back-to-back Sabres programs with Buffalo Sabres: French Connection Statue Unveiling at 10 p.m. and then another airing of Buffalo Sabres: Rafters Club Roundtable at 11 p.m.
Viewers in the Buffalo and Rochester markets will be able to watch the programming on MSG, while viewers in the Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany markets can watch on the MSG+ network. DirecTV subscribers will be able to view only the classic game broadcasts on channels 638 and 638-1(HD).
